The truth doesn’t play favorites. It doesn’t bend for comfort. It doesn’t choose sides between men and women — it cuts straight through both. Jesus didn’t come to protect our excuses; He came to pierce our hearts with truth. The standard we live by today is rooted in Leviticus law and fulfilled by Jesus’ teaching on the heart. This applies to everyone: men, women, married, and single.

Table of Contents

1. The Law Was Never Gendered — Leviticus 20:10

“If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.”

God never excused one and punished the other. The commandment applied equally to both men and women. The law established that adultery was serious, harmed the community, and required accountability. This is the foundation upon which we build our life and behavior.

2. Mercy Was Never Meant to Be a Shield for Sin — John 8:1–11

When the scribes brought the woman caught in adultery before Jesus, they sought to trap Him. Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and sin no more.”

Mercy does not excuse sin. It gives the opportunity to repent. Modern misuse of this story has led some to believe they can continue sinning without consequence. This is a distortion of God’s truth.

3. Jesus Raised the Standard — Matthew 5:27–28

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery in his heart.”

Jesus moved the law from observable acts to the heart. Sin begins in thought, desire, and planning. Men and women alike are accountable, because God judges the intent of the heart, not just outward behavior.

4. Scenarios of Heart-Level Adultery

  • Married man, married woman: Fantasizing or desiring another’s spouse = heart-level adultery.
  • Married man, single woman: Desire or planning outside marriage = sin in heart, violates covenant.
  • Married woman, single man: Fantasizing about another man = sin in heart.
  • Single man, married woman: Desire for a married woman = sin in heart.
  • Single woman, married man: Desire for a married man = sin in heart.

All of these scenarios involve intentional thinking, calculation, and rationalization — the same place where Jesus teaches sin begins. Lust in the mind is already sin.

5. The Hypocrite Effect

When the Pharisees brought the woman before Jesus, they sought to trap Him. This created a ripple we call the Hypocrite Effect. Today, some misuse mercy to justify behavior that God never condoned. The original hypocrisy allowed people to twist the lesson, but truth is immutable: both men and women are accountable for heart-level adultery and lust.

6. The Warning of Revelation 22:18-19

“I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things… and if any man shall take away from the words… God shall take away his part out of the book of life.”

This teaching is serious. Political correctness, softening, or altering the truth is exactly the type of tampering God warns against. The law, mercy, and accountability must be preserved as given — nothing added, nothing removed.

Genesis 1:26-27 Reference

“Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”

This is the foundation of the entire conversation: every time the word man appears in this writing, it refers to the humanity God made — both male and female — in His image. Accountability, holiness, and righteousness are shared responsibilities that reflect His divine likeness.
